Greek man Theoklitos Proestakis, also known as Takis, was formerly a dentist and used to own his own nightclub.
But, he gave up his former career to save dogs. He now runs a dog sanctuary for all the canines. When he finds dogs dumped by their owners, he brings them to his dog sanctuary and takes care of them.
It was a dog named Fellnase, who had been skinned alive, that made Takis give up on his career and start a dog sanctuary.
“One day I went to the rubbish dump and I saw horrible and crazy things there.”
“There were so many dogs, and they had broken legs, they were starving, they were so skinny and so sick and dying. It horrified me,” he said.
As Takis posted photos of Fellnase online, people came to know about his work and started donating. He funds his work with the donations he gets from all over the world.
“Since I put the photos up online of the dog and the work that I had done to heal her, people have seen the pictures and want to help. I still have my shelter, and now I have hope.”
“This is my life,” he added. “It’s difficult but I love it,” he said.
Takis has saved 500 dogs so far and his dog shelter now covers an area of 5,200 square meters and costs nearly 1,300 euros (approx. US$1,508) on a monthly basis just to feed the animals, with vet bills adding an additional 700 euros (approx. US$812).
“I work so hard here but when I see the dogs happy and enjoying themselves and learning to trust people again then it’s all worth it,” he said.
