One World War 2 soldier and hero from Poland managed to complete one last mission before passing away. Bronislaw ‘Grom’ Karwowski proudly walked his granddaughter down the aisle at her wedding.
Karwowski was a Polish soldier who was captured by Nazis in WWII but managed to escape the Gestapo headquarters in Lomza, north-eastern Poland. In 1948, he was arrested yet again during Poland’s communist period and remained imprisoned until 1953.
However, Karwowski’s final walk down the aisle was no less strenuous than his wartime exploits as the 94-year-old veteran struggled against his own ailing body as one final gift to his granddaughter, Joanna, as they walked down the aisle at her wedding in Bialystok, northern Poland.
He wore military garb, complete with all the medals and citations that were earned through his own sweat and blood. Following the pair was a retinue of soldiers also in full military garb. But it was a fitting honor for his granddaughter’s wedding.
Joanna’s future husband seemed to be holding back tears as the video showed both grandfather and granddaughter determinedly making their way towards the end of the aisle. Upon reaching the groom, Karwowski momentarily let go of his crutch so that he could shake hands with his granddaughter’s future husband.
The groom, in thanks for the honor, kissed Karwowski on both cheeks.
Sadly, Karwowski passed away just two days after the wedding. However, we’re sure he went with the satisfaction that he was able to do one final thing for his darling gem.
Karwowski was the recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland, among many other awards, for his service to Poland.
The National Armed Forces released a statement announcing the passing of Karwowski on social media:
“We regret to announce that today, on 1st September 2018, on the 79th anniversary of Germany’s assault on Poland, the national hero and insurgent of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, Major Bronislaw Karwowski retired to the eternal guard. He was 94 years old.
“He was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland, the Silver Cross of Merit with Swords, the Cross of the National Armed Deed and many others.”
Social media users echoed the praise given to the veteran and one translated tweet read:
“Today, on September 1, 2018, Maj. Bronisław Karwowski aka “Grom” departed to eternal rank – a long-time member of the Supreme Council of the NSZ Soldiers’ Union, an officer of the Second Conspiracy of NSZ-NZW.
“In March ’47 he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. He was arrested in ’48, tortured and imprisoned until 1953.”
One person who watched the video of Karwowski walking Joanna down the aisle wrote: “I watched this twice. It’s just something magnificent.”
